Photography as a family hobby, can be a powerful language if you connect the images that you took with stories. Each picture that you have captured actually has a story and meaning. It is very gratifying to know if those who will view the photographs you have taken could recognize the meaning of such pictures. Taking photos can be a lot of fun. It also leads to more travels and adventures as well as meeting new friends when you go on location to shoot a subject of your own choice and which appeals to you.
Photography can even develop into more than a hobby. It can be a potential source of income. You can display and sell your photos in art galleries, art shows and local venues. You can also put them up in a stock photo site and earn usage rights through websites in the Internet.
A formal photographic education is totally not necessary in pursuing this family hobby. There are so many renowned photographers who are self-taught and who learned the craft by self-experiment only. Some learned it by attending photography orientation-workshop programs.
Digital technology easily paved the way for people to take photography as a hobby and bring creativity into their lives by capturing breath-taking images and the beauty of Mother Nature. Amazingly, with today’s digital cameras, you can start selecting a subject, point your digital instrument at it and then shoot with no worries of running out of film. You can also receive immediate feedback and you have choices to re-shoot or retain a shot. If the result is not to your satisfaction, then you can delete a shot.
I can still remember a very active 5-year old cousin of mine, nicknamed as Bronzon, who once took a shot at a “white lady holding the hand of her small son by her side” walking at the corridor of the office where his mother works. It was 6:30 o’clock in the afternoon, nearly dark, when my uncle, together with Bronzon, arrived at the office to fetch my aunt who was then working overtime with her reports to be submitted to her Boss early in the morning of the next day. While my aunt was preparing to leave the office, my cousin got the digital camera of his mother and rushed outside to take a picture. When they reached home and looked at the picture taken by their son, they found out that their son has captured the image of the “mother and son” ghosts which were believed to be haunting my aunt’s office. What I am trying to drive at, with this story, is that photographing nowadays is that simple! Just point at the subject then click the digital camera.
There are a wide range of subjects to choose from when you undertake photography as your hobby. You can take photos of people you care about, your pet animals or birds, landscapes, botanical wonders, interesting pieces of arts and architecture, local characters, ethnic groups and special events.
For new hobbyists who are starting out in photography, here are a few simple tips:
- Invest in good photography equipment. A digital camera is one of the easiest photographic equipment that will meet your needs to fully enjoy the hobby.
- Consider using a tripod. You can produce great images when you have a steady camera and set it up for the best angles.
- Select a subject you want to photograph. Consider what you enjoy and find a special topic that interests you or is close to your heart.
- Get to know your digital camera by practicing taking photos in your home or in your backyard. Practice getting quicker to the draw. Do not worry about taking many pictures. The more you photograph, the more you learn because practice makes perfect.
- Check the lighting. Sometimes the camera flash is insufficient in supplying the needed light to create a clear image. You need to be aware if the light is blazing directly and brightly upon your whole subject.
- Be wise but be bold. Experiment by photographing the image from different angles. Example is photographing the subject from the top or above, getting down on its level, and other angles. In this way, you may even create great shots on unexpected or unplanned moments.
When photographing, shoot with a purpose. You are not just going out and take pictures, you have a reason for it; and remember to Shoot for yourself and for the love of it!
